Chapter 4.46, Generation 4

Chapter 4.46

-Caleb-

“Jimmy!” I yelled at my brother and loudly pounded at his door as I walked by his room. “I’m leaving and I don’t care if you need more time.”

We were picking up our dates at Caroline’s house so we can all go together to enjoy the night we were all waiting for for so long – our senior prom.

“I’m coming,” Jimmy’s voice shouted from behind the door.

I walked downstairs and found mom with a phone in her hands, taking a photo of my sister and her boyfriend. She was now waiting for us to join them so she can take a hundred more.

My brother finally joined us wearing a blue suit with gray shirt and black tie.

“Ok everyone,” mom gathered us, “get together for a group photo and please, please, make sure you have someone take a picture of all of you with the girls.”

All three of us mumbled something like ‘ok’ and ‘we will’ and posed for the photo.

“Mom, we have to go. I don’t want to be late. I’m sure Caroline’s and Emmalee’s parents will take pictures, too. I’ll ask them to send them to you,” I decided to cut off the photo shoot.

“Ok, ok,” mom agreed, “of course you can’t be late. You all look so good.”

I could tell she is starting to be emotional, “mom please don’t cry. It’s just a prom.”

“Alright,” she sighed sadly, “I just can’t believe how grown up you are. Just the other day you were just three babies I brought home from the hospital and now….”

“…and now we’re almost late to pick up our prom dates,” Jimmy cut her off and opened the front door.

“Bye mom,” I kissed her on a cheek and my brother did the same.

“Bye boys. Have fun, be good.”

We walked into the heavy snow outside and when we were almost on the side walk, my mom yelled, “wait! The corsages!”

That was close. Showing up without a corsage would be embarrassing.

“Thanks, mom. Love you.” I grabbed two boxes with corsages, one for my girlfriend and one for Jimmy’s date.

It was a very short ride in the limo to Caroline’s house. I was nervous to see my girlfriend’s parents, especially her father, again. He was a typical, protective father of a teenage daughter and..he hated me.

“Come in,” Caroline’s mom opened the front door and invited us in, “you boys look so cute.”

“Yea, cute,” Emmalee’s dad mumbled to himself but laud enough for everyone to hear. I noticed his wife poking him in the ribs with her elbow to shut him down.

I didn’t see the girls anywhere and then I realized that’s probably why everyone is lined up under the staircase. They were waiting for them, cameras ready, to come down in their prom dresses.

Now I kind of wished we were a little late. At least we would avoid this awkward moment when we were standing around with their parents.

Luckily it didn’t take them long to come out of Caroline’s room. When we heard the door open, all eyes turned to the staircase.

My gorgeous girlfriend showed up first in her long gold dress with one long sleeve and one exposed shoulder. Her hair was tucked behind her ear on one side and loose and wavy on the other. She looked absolutely stunning.

One step behind her was walking her best friend. Her long brown hair was lying on her right shoulder. She was wearing a long burgundy dress with thin straps.

I looked at my brother and I could tell that she took his breath away just like Emmalee took mine.

He was standing under the staircase quietly, his smile from ear to ear. I knew he liked Caroline but now I’m convinced he’s in love with her. You don’t look at a girl you ‘just like’ the way he was looking at her.

I stepped closer to my girlfriend and smiled at her, “you look so beautiful.”

“Thanks baby. You don’t look so bad yourself.”

I pulled up the box with the corsage I almost left at home and slid the flower on her wrist.

She was looking into my eyes and I wanted to kiss her so much, but with her father being in the same room, it will have to wait.

After posing for who knows how many pictures while being stabbed by my girlfriend’s father’s eyes, we were finally ready to go.

Before we left, Mr. Morrison stopped me and Emmalee.

“Alright guys, listen,” he stepped in font of us, “I know you think tonight is the night but, trust me, it isn’t.”

“What are you talking about, dad?”

“What am I talking about? Your pills, that’s what I’m talking about.”

“What?” Emmalee’s eyes widened in shock and she hid her face under her hand, “I can’t believe mom told you! And like that’s not bad enough, you now use it to embarrass me in front of my boyfriend and friends!”

“I’m not trying to embarrass you, I’m trying to protect you.”

“Protect me?” She raised her voice. “Protect me from what? My boyfriend that loves me? Caleb has never given you a reason to dislike him other than dating me. Well guess what, we’re not breaking up any time soon and yes, maybe I was planning on having sex with him tonight! Try and stop me!”

I just stood there. What just happened?! Emmalee’s mom stepped in and a pulled her father away, ending this conversation.

Thank God! That was uncomfortable.

My girlfriend left the house without looking back and the rest of us followed. All the adults were standing in front of the house, watching us get into the limo Jimmy and I rented for tonight.

-Emmalee-

I was quietly looking out the window of the limousine the whole ride to school. The snow was still coming down hard, I’m surprised mom even let me and Emmett go to prom with the weather being the way it is. She’s terrified of snow and car combination every since my father got into the accident that left him in a coma for almost a month.

My father, I scoffed in my mind, I can’t believe he just tried to ruin my night.

“We’re here.” Caleb grabbed my hand and helped me out of the limousine. “Are you ok?”

“I’m fine, just pissed at my dad.” I entered the school hallway and continued towards the gym.

“Do you want to talk about what he said?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Guys!” Caleb’s sister Leah waved at us from the dance floor when she noticed us and ran over to greet us. “You made it. I thought you got stuck somewhere in the snow.”

“Thankfully not, but it’s pretty rough out there,” Jimmy said.

“Hey we should take the picture mom wanted when we’re all here.” She called over her boyfriend Elliot to join us for a group photo.

After posing in front of the black and gold backdrop for more photos and a few glasses of a delicious punch, that was most definitely spiked, my mood improved and all I wanted to do was dance.

We were having so much fun on the dance floor when all of a sudden the music stopped and all the lights went black. About ten or fifteen minutes later, after the teachers brought and lit up a bunch of candles to provide some light, one of them stepped up on the stage, that was decorated for the king and a queen announcement, to finally tell us what is going on.

“Good evening, students.” Mrs. Peterson started, speaking very loudly, so everyone can hear her with no working microphone. “As all of you probably noticed, the school is currently without power. We are in touch with the town energy department and they will work on fixing the problem as soon as the weather allows it. In the meantime, for everyone’s safety, no one is allowed to leave the school. All parents are being notified as we speak so you don’t have to worry about that. As soon as it’s safe to drive, the school will organize drop offs for each student following regular school bus routes. So please, get comfortable, it might be a long night for everyone. Thank you.”

-Emmett-

Most of the kids stayed in the gym, but some people left to wait it out in the hallways or class rooms. That included me and Melissa. We ended up sitting on the desks in the library and chatting.

“I can’t believe we are still here.” I said, frustrated, after two hours of waiting. “This is a sign I should have never came.”

“Why did you?”

“Why did I what?”

“Why did you decide to invite me to prom all of a sudden. You never explained why you showed up at my house that night.”

“I told you, no specific reason. I just…thought it would be fun to go.” I lied. I didn’t want to tell her what my grandpa said that night. It was embarrassing.

“I don’t believe you.” Melissa shook her head. “I’ve known you for like eleven years, Emmett. I know when you’re hiding something.”

“Fine! You want the truth?” I spread my arms in the air. “My grandfather said he though I’m gay. That’s why I decided to invite you to prom to show him that he’s wrong.”

“Oh great.” Melissa looked down. “So you’re using me to cover up your homosexuality?”

Until I saw her sad face, I didn’t realize how wrong it was of me to do this. I now knew for a while that she liked me more than just a friend. It wasn’t fair to her.

“Mel, no. I would never do that.” I jumped off the desk and stepped closer to her. I lifted her chin, making her look me in the eyes. “You know I love you, just not like that.”

“So are you gay or not?!” She asked, confused. Maybe she would be relieved if I said yes. Maybe it would make her feel better knowing it’s not her I’m not interested in but her gender in general.

“No, I’m not.” I said quietly.

“Ok, prove it!”

“What? How?”

“Oh for crying out loud!”

-Emmalee-

Caleb and I spent some time with our friends in the gym and then, wanting some privacy, we grabbed one of the candles and walked into the hallway. We passed Caroline and Jimmy talking on the stairs and continued to the music room, which seemed to be the only empty class room.

Caleb sat behind the piano and I jumped on top of it.

I was surprised when he started to play a beautiful melody that filled up the dark room.

“Wow.” I exhaled when he finished. “I had no idea you know how to play.”

“I haven’t played in years. I used to play with dad before he,” he paused, “before he died.”

“You should play more often.” I jumped down and sat on his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck. “It was beautiful.”

“You know what else is beautiful?” Caleb smiled at me and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer to him.

“No,” I bit my lips flirtatiously because I knew how much it turns him on.

“Stop doing that, you know I can’t help myself when you do that.”

“Do what?” I pretended that I don’t know what is he referring to and slowly leaned closer and closer to his face.

“Tease,” my boyfriend said before our lips finally connected in a long, passionate kiss that left us both eager for more.

After our swollen lips parted I looked him in the eyes. “So, about what my dad said, about the pills.”

“Yea?”

“Well, it’s true. I’m on the pill. I’m ready to…I want you, Caleb.”

“Are you sure?”

I nodded quietly and kissed him again. Longer and more passionately than before. His hands slid down on my butt, rhythmically pushing me closer to his crotch. I felt how much he wanted me and I wanted him too. Right here, right now.

I was about to tuck up my long dress when…

We both looked up at the ceiling where the bright light was coming from. The power was back.

Moments later, the teacher’s voice came from the speaker: “Good evening, students. It looks like we got our power back so I ask everyone to be gather in the hallway within the next fifteen minutes. The busses will be waiting and taking you home. Thank you, be safe and I will see everyone on Monday.”

“Well,” I looked at Caleb, “that’s that.”

We burst out laughing. That is not the end of the evening we were planning but who cares. There will be other nights…
