“I can’t believe it’s almost the end of October,” Nora said when she was looking at the calendar on the desk in her new office.
Nora was moved to the fourth floor and once she settled in on her new position, she made Dakota her assistant and photographer.
Dakota’s new desk was right outside Nora’s office and she also got a very good raise.
“I know,” Dakota agreed, “isn’t yours and Dean’s three months anniversary coming up?”
“Yes, it is,” she smiled shyly and looked down, “he’s taking me for a weekend getaway somewhere.”
“He’s so sweet. I’m kinda jealous of you two. You’re so perfect for each other.”
“You and Nate are great together, too. Is something going on?”
“No. Not really, I mean…that’s the thing. Nothing’s really going on.”
“What do you mean?” Nora had a hard time understanding what her friend is trying to say.
“It’s just…nothing. So you’re taking Dean to the Halloween party at Laura’s? ” Dakota changed the subject when she realized Nora didn’t know what she was talking about.
How could she? She was in a perfect relationship. She loved Dean and Dean loved her very much.
“Yea. We already planned our costumes,” Nora giggled.
“Of course you did,” Dakota rolled her eyes jokingly, “I feel bad for Trev. He has nothing going on. Do you think I should invite him?”
“Sure, I don’t see why not.”
Dakota got to Nate’s apartment where they were supposed to get ready for the Halloween party their coworker was hosting at her house. They bought their vampire costumes two weeks ago and now they just had to do their make up.
“Ready to suck some blood tonight?” Nate joked and made a vampire face.
Dakota laughed, “yea, it should be fun. Too bad Trev didn’t want to go. I think he doesn’t want to be a third wheel anymore.”
“He’s a big boy, he can handle it. He’s been following you around like a puppy.”
Dakota got mad when Nate was making jokes about Trevor.
“For your information, this puppy has been like a family to me these past few months.” she raised her voice, “he helped me like no one ever before so I would appreciate it if you stopped making fun of him.”
“Woah, calm down. I didn’t say anything bad.”
“Maybe I don’t wanna calm down, Nate. I don’t think I wanna do this anymore.”
“Don’t wanna do what?” Nate was confused, “where is this coming from?”
Dakota went from mad to sad, “Us…look you’re a really nice guy but…I don’t feel the same way you feel. I’m sorry.”
She left him standing in the middle of his living room and walked into the dark hallway, closing the door of his apartment behind her.
She felt horrible that she ruined his Halloween night but she also felt very relieved. She knew for a while now that she didn’t want to be with Nate and now it was over. It will be awkward at work but that’s something she will have to deal with.
Before she went home, she stopped in a liquor store to buy some wine. She definitely needed a drink.
When she opened the front door, she found Trevor on the couch, holding a glass of wine and watching a horror movie.
“What are you doing here? I thought you guys have the party tonight.”
“We do..I mean..they do. I broke up with Nate.”
“I don’t know, I just…did.”
Trevor noticed she doesn’t want to talk about it, “I got wine, you want some?”
“I got some too,” she laughed and lifted the bottle in her hand.
“I’ll get you a glass.”
He poured her a glass and they talked. They talked about good and funny things and they talked about sad and serious things. Just like the first night after he fixed her car.
When they got hungry they made chocolate covered fruit in the hot fontaine Dakota got as a gift when she opened a checking account in a bank. She’s never used it before but it came with a bunch of different flavors. They couldn’t agree whether to use white or dark chocolate so they decided on a chocolate swirl.
It was dripping all over her face when she started eating it.
Trevor came closer and started to gently wipe the chocolate off of her cheek with the back of his hand, “you have some….chocolate on your face,” he said quietly.
At that moment, all she wanted was for him to kiss her. She knew he wanted it too, but he just cleared his throat and walked back to the couch, “more wine?”
“Sure,” she smiled and joined him in the living room.
She sat on the floor with her glass of wine. They were drinking for several hours now and she was starting to feel it. The boundaries were slowly disappearing and she felt brave enough to tell Trevor how she feels.
She set her glass on the coffee table and took a seat next to him.
“Do you believe in destiny?” she asked.
“Destiny? I believe everything happens for a reason, yes.”
Dakota nodded, “me too…I believe I was supposed to catch my ex cheating on me that night. I was supposed to leave Sierra and I was supposed to put diesel in my car.” They both chuckled at the memory. “The garage was supposed to be closed and you were supposed to be working on your car in front of this house so I could find you…”
Trevor put his hands on her shoulders and pulled her closer, breathing heavily, “I’m glad you found me, Dakota,” he whispered.
“I’m glad I found you, too.”
To be continued…
